The origins of Thomas the Tank Engine
Christopher Awdry has visited the society on the odd occasion, and there is an interesting blog here on the origins of the fictional Island of Sodor.
“Thomas the Tank Engine – or rather, the series of books in which he originates - has one of the most complete worlds in fantasy fiction, and you’d barely even know it.
“The books, collectively known as the Railway Series, first appeared in 1945. The first title was The Three Railway Engines, and didn’t even feature Thomas. The engines just lived on some railway somewhere.”

Local heartache over route of high-speed rail link
Today (Monday 20th) the government defended plans for its new high-speed railway. Journey times will be slashed between London and the Midlands but the line will cut right through the beautiful Chilterns. Read more
New club for autistic train fans in Reading
A new monthly train club is being launched aimed especially at locomotive fans on the autistic spectrum.
The Engine Shed will meet at the Katesgrove Children’s Centre, Reading, and the first session will take place tonight.

Boxing day at Jocks Lane Miniature Railway
The Traditional Boxing Day Meet at Jocks Lane from 10am till around lunchtime (as if you need lunch after yesterday!) is on as usual this year.
The format will be familiar: Bring a Loco; bring the spouse; bring a turkey sandwich; bring a friend, but most of all bring yourself.
All members welcome, not just the Motive Power regulars.
