Public Openings of Clubroom at Christmas

The Society’s HQ clubroom at No 6 Pinewood Centre is to be open to the public from 12.noon to 3.00pm on Sundays 4th and 11th December. There will be displays of railway modelling and layouts in operation.

On 4th, there will be a Christmas market organised by the Wokingham Without Parish Council in the adjacent building.

These two days are also when Pinewood Miniature Railway will be operating their Santa Special trains. All seats on these are now booked, but why not view them from Station Parade. If you are already booked on a train, visit our open days before you leave the site.

Exhibition Cancelled

The Society’s Large Autumn Exhibition, scheduled for 22nd October, has been cancelled. We were most reluctant to have to come to this decision and apologise to our supporters for any inconvenience or disappointment.

Nursery Run Report

The now traditional annual run at Jocks Lane Railway for the Plus Three Nurseries Fun Day took place this year on Friday 22^nd July. Yes, the day of the AGM!

Unusually the weather was glorious, and this added to the enjoyment of the event for all.

There were six groups of children moving by rota through six different activities. We carried about 140 children in total on three-lap rides, kept in order by some 85 adults, with at least one adult per train load. Once again we were told that ‘the trains’ were the most popular of the activities, and not only with the children. A generous donation was made to the Society and we have been provisionally booked again for next year.

Apart from a couple of temporary failures, the locos behaved. Thank you to all those members who turned out to help, either with their engines or as support staff, etc. The drivers comprised:

Ivan with his S&D 7F 2-8-0
David M with 1506.
Frances with her quarry Hunslet, Connie
Brenda with her Speedy.
Harry, driving the Class 33
David S with his 0-6-0 Polly

Helpers included Cliff, Peter T, Eddie, John A, Gerry, and David E. Apologies if any names have been missed.

Live music at Pinewood Leisure Centre

A Popular Duo called ‘G Wizz’ will be performing.

Jocks Lane Railway Nursery Run 2011

The local nursery schools have once again booked the railway to be part of their End of Year Fun Day at Jocks Lane.

The date this year is Friday 22nd July with the first train departing at 9.45am sharp. Arrangements will be as usual so we ideally need at least six locos & drivers, plus marshals, relief drivers, refreshment providers, waterers, coalers, track degreasers, etc.

All help will be welcome. Would you please let David Elen know if you are able to assist, please?

Slough bus station: Silver dolphin or beached whale?

The futuristic look of Slough’s new bus station is a far cry from the old 1970s building, which had become a landmark of the town’s industrial image.

Its fate was sealed when it starred in the opening credits of BBC hit television comedy The Office and was the first to go in Slough’s £450m makeover project – Heart Of Slough.

Reading rail bridge up for engineering award

Caversham Road rail bridge in Reading is up for an engineering award

The new multi-million pound Caversham Road railway bridge and road improvements to Junction 11 of the M4 are among the projects shortlisted for a prestigious engineering award.

The Network Rail reconstruction of Caversham Road bridge cost £3.6 million and is part of the £600 million project to redevelop Reading Station to increase train capacity and reduce delays.
